RODGERS MIGHT JUST GLAS-GO

- PAUL HETHERINGTON

CELTIC don’t just have a battle with Rangers on their hands today in the most high-profile Old Firm derby for years. Regardless of the result against a Rangers side managed by former England captain Steven Gerrard, Celtic face a fight to keep their boss Brendan Rodgers. There is a widely held view in the game that Rodgers, 45, is starting to think he has gone as far as he can with the Hoops. His two full seasons at Parkhead have seen him achieve a double Treble – but domestic dominance is unlikely to be enough for the Northern Irishman. He clearly wants Celtic to be a force in Europe again and is understood to be frustrated at the lack of meaningful investment in his squad to give him a chance of achieving that. Leicester are being touted on the grapevine as a potential destination for Rodgers, depending on how their season develops under Claude Puel.

The Celtic boss (left) has also in the past been linked with Arsenal and a move to Europe could also appeal.

But Rodgers will be fully focused today on trying to get the better of his former Anfield captain Gerrard. Celtic versus Rangers will always be a massive occasion – but it now has an even wider appeal, following Gerrard’s decision to launch his managerial career at Ibrox.

It is being claimed there is almost as much interest in today’s showdown on Merseyside as there is in Glasgow, as the former manager and captain of Liverpool battle it out.
