Supersub James is a Vaughan winner

- By JANINE SELF

JAMES VAUGHAN showed the attacking strength Wigan have waiting in the wings as he came off the bench to snatch a win.

Latics boss Paul Cook, frustrated by a gutsy Rotherham side, threw on Vaughan and Callum McManaman with half an hour remaining.

And the deadly duo did the trick as McManaman’s shot was pushed out by Marek Rodak for Vaughan to scramble home.

Rotherham manager Paul Warne said: “I’m disappointed.

“In the first half we weren’t at it and we didn’t play well but I thought we were the better side in the second half.”

The star of the first 45 minutes was Josh Windass who has swapped Rangers for the Lancashire Latics.

There were flicks, dinks, pin-point passes and an appetite to pick up the ball all over the pitch.

Rotherham really did not know how to cope with Windass, who was replaced by £1.2million new boy Joe Garner in injury time – talk about attacking talent!

Wigan assistant boss Leam Richardson said: “Squads are key. Today Vaughany and Macca take the plaudits but Rotherham made it difficult for us.”

The Millers were still level at the break thanks to some last-ditch defending.

Windass went close with a free-kick and even closer when he turned Nick Powell’s pass inches wide of the post.

Within 60 seconds of the restart it was Will Grigg’s turn to shoot wide. He did it again moments later which was the signal for Cook to ring the changes.

Grigg and Powell were hooked for Vaughan and McManaman and the supersubs did the rest.

Rotherham rallied, with a save by Christian Walton denying Ryan Williams.
