GIRAFFE TOT IS ‘WAKING UP’

- ■ by BILL FRANCIS

THE critically injured tot attacked by a giraffe is beginning to wake up from a medically induced coma.

Finn Williams, three, needed brain surgery after he and his biologist mother Katy, 35, were attacked in a wildlife reserve.

They were only saved by chance when her British husband Dr Sam Williams returned from a trail run and saw the giraffe trampling them.

He managed to chase it away and summoned emergency help.

His terribly injured wife and son were airlifted by two air ambulance choppers to hospital. The pair are slowly recovering in intensive care at the Busamed Modderfontein Hospital near Johannesburg, South Africa.

However both are said to have suffered “life-changing injuries”.

Dad Sam, 36, from Bradford, West Yorks, has been keeping bedside vigils since it happened on September 3.

The family’s lawyer Marina Botha said: “Finn is beginning to wake up.

“As his sedatives are reduced and he starts to regain consciousness his medical team expect to get further indications of the severity of his injuries. We can confirm that he is breathing independently and we hope to have more information in the near future.”

His parents are praying that their son has not suffered permanent brain damage.

Lawyer Marina added: “Katy’s recovery is going well and her condition is improving daily.

“She is communicating with Sam by writing.”

The giraffe attack happened yards from their home on the Blyde Wildlife Estate in Hoedspruit after they stumbled across the giraffe and her young calf by accident.
