DIY vid seals Dr role

JODIE’S SO AT HOME IN TARDIS

- ■ by JAMES DESBOROUGH

NEW Doctor Who Jodie Whittaker landed the part after making her own sci-fi set in her front room.

The actress, 36, was asked to make a tape of herself playing the Time Lord after she secretly auditioned for BBC chiefs.

She went home and shot a video of herself pretending to defuse an explosive device – with makeshift props including phone cables as Tardis wires.

As a result she was cast as the first woman in the role. Jodie said: “Yeah, it was very high end, the production value was huge!

“I went in for my audition and then I had to make a tape, so I was filming – but I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone what I was auditioning for.

“I had to wait until midnight, until everyone had gone to bed, and then do this self-tape.

‘The only thing I could find in my flat were a load of iPhone wires that you always accumulate, and I made a shoe box and I basically defused... it wasn’t a bomb, but it was something along those lines.

“But I defused many things in my flat, by myself, just running around, and it got me the job – so thanks very much.”

The first person Jodie broke the news to was her mum – whispering into her mobile as she walked through a London station. She said: “I was in such a state. I was in St Pancras, and I was like, ‘Mum, I need to talk in code. You know that thing I cannot talk about? I think it has kind of happened’. We both had a little cry.”

And there were more tears when Jodie watched the first episode with fans in New York on Sunday. She said: “I blubbed my eyes out, feeling the audience and the fans

“It is a wonderful way to watch it – with the people you make it for.”
