SAS axes leave over terror fear

-

THE SAS has cancelled Christmas leave for its counter terrorist team amid fears of an attack over the festive period.

The elite force and members of another SAS squadron have been told parties have been banned in the run-up to the new year.

MI5 and Britain’s security chiefs believe it is only a matter of time before the UK is attacked again, and Christmas is regarded as a soft target by jihadis.

There have been more than 45 attacks in Europe in the past two years and MI5 believes dozens of terrorists are in the UK.

The move follows an MI5 probe to see if Cherif Chekatt, who shot dead five civilians in Strasbourg, had UK links.

Sources said Chekatt may have entered the UK under a false identity to forge links with jihadis. The SAS counter-terrorist force, which comprises two teams based at the regiment’s Hereford HQ, will be on immediate notice to react to any emergency.

Members of the force will back up police firearms units in the event of a terrorist emergency.

A source said: “One half of the CT team is always on duty even on Christmas Day, but it’s the first time in years that both teams have had their leave cancelled.

“Other troops from another squadron have also been told to remain on the base. It wasn’t the best news.”

It can also be revealed that the SAS and the Special Reconnaissance Regiment have been patrolling shopping centres and will mingle with crowds at New Year’s Eve events.

Snipers in helicopters will also be on standby.

An MoD spokesman said: “We do not comment on special forces.”
