Brave Babs carries on fighting, says Paul

- By HALINA WATTS

BARBARA Windsor is putting up a brave fight against Alzheimer’s but keeps repeating herself, says her close pal Paul O’Grady.

The TV host says Babs, 81, can remember her mother’s Co-op membership number but sometimes says the same thing twice.

Paul said: “Barbara is a sweetheart. We are in touch all the time. People write her off, but she is doing really well.

“She went to the panto the other night and to 42nd Street. I ran into her and said: ‘What’s your mum’s Co-op number, can you remember?’

“She told me and said: ‘How the hell do we remember that?’

“I said: ‘Do you remember me?’ And she said: ‘You are hard to ever forget’.”

When asked what Barbara’s main battle was, Paul said: “You repeat yourself. If she does repeat herself, you just answer it and carry on like you haven’t heard the question before.” He added that Barbara’s husband Scott is “doing a marvellous job”. And Scott plans a quiet Christmas with family.

Paul, right, hosts ITV’s For The Love Of Dogs on Christmas Day.

But he says there are “no deaths” on the show in order to protect viewers.

He explained: “For The Love Of Dogs are very careful on Christmas Day. It’s an hour long and there are no deaths – no dead dog.

“They are sad when they come in but when they have been patched up by the staff there, they go to a nice home. It’s a Cinderella story I think.” Paul criticised the BBC for showing repeats at Christmas. He said: “If it’s Dad’s Army again, no, I don’t want repeats. I’ve seen them all millions of times.”
