No magic from Potter in tactical nightmare

- By NEIL NAISMITH

GRAHAM POTTER’S tactical horror show cost Swansea victory and earned Wigan a point.

The Liberty Stadium boss apologised to his team’s supporters for the decision to switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation for the visit of the Latics, who remain winless since November.

Potter’s change of system backfired as a clueless Swansea went to the break

2-0 down with Wigan striker Joe Garner scoring twice.

Potter rectified his mistakes for the second period as Dan Burn’s own goal and a Mike van der Hoorn volley ensured the game ended all square.

He said: “In terms of performance, the first half was the poorest since I have been here. But I take full responsibility for that. I have to put my hands up.

“I apologised to the players at full time and I want to do the same to the fans.

“Wigan did what they do well in the first half but the reaction in the second was excellent and I am very proud of the team.”

The Latics made the most of chaos in the Swansea ranks and Garner tucked home a

10th-minute penalty after Wayne Routledge fouled Kal Naismith.

The visitors were dominant and Reece James’ corner was converted by Garner as Swansea were booed off at the break. Wigan could and should have been further clear.

Potter swapped Cian Harries and striker Courtney Baker-Richardson for Jefferson Montero and Kyle Naughton as they reverted to a back four for the start of the second half.

Swansea pulled one back when Matt Grimes whipped in a corner and the final touch came off Wigan captain Burn.

Potter threw on another striker in Wilfried Bony and the equaliser arrived when Van der Hoorn converted a Bersant Celina corner.

Wigan boss Paul Cook said: “It’s disappointing to concede from two set-pieces but we couldn’t handle Swansea’s substitutes and in the end a draw is probably a fair result.”
