GUNNERS GET SET TO MAKE A MARC

-

ARSENAL are ready to make a move for former star Marc Overmars to become their new technical director.

The Gunners’ transfer strategy has been deemed not fit for purpose by the club, with manager Unai Emery and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat unable to form a working relationship.

Now the London club are looking towards Overmars to solve a problem that had also hamstrung his former boss Arsene Wenger in his final years in charge at The Emirates.

Overmars, 45, has worked as Ajax’s director of football for almost seven years.

He has been responsible for developing brilliant young Dutch talents like Frenkie de Jong, Matthijs de Ligt and Justin Kluivert as well as the recruitment of current Premier League stars Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez.

But Ajax are now viewed as a selling club and although they will meet Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League, they have not won a trophy for four years.

And Arsenal believe the Dutchman can solve their recruitment problems. Emery continues to insist that his relationship with Mislintat is “normal”. But the German, 46, is looking for an escape route home after arriving from Borussia Dortmund 15 months ago. Overmars – who was capped 86 times for Holland, spent three seasons at Highbury and the winger helped the Gunners win a Premier League and FA Cup double in 1998.

He also starred for Ajax and Barcelona, winning three Dutch titles and the Champions League with the Amsterdam club.

Overmars (right) still has close friends at Arsenal and his links with Ajax are very strong.

He works closely alongside chief executive Edwin van der Sar. While Ajax are on a strong financial footing – their bank account will be boosted by another £100million-plus this summer when they sell De Jong and De Ligt – the prospect of working for Arsenal will be a huge lure. SIMON MULLOCK
