rules to protect aid: “If you go itzerland it’s in your lease that you’re not allowed to flush your loo at night, so you don’t disturb anyone else’s sleep.
“Paris has been closing down nightclubs in residential districts for the same reason.”
He says the idea of a 24-hour society is almost uniquely English – and our quality of life is suffering as a result.
Dr Neil added: “Europeans have a much more sensible relationship with sleep. We’ve got this very macho view of sending work emails at midnight. At Volkswagen in Germany, you’re not allowed to send emails outside of work.”
We’re not the only ones slacking on sleep. According to Dr Neil, the Japanese economy is losing billions because of sleep deprivation.
Too much overtime has left exhausted workers unhealthy and unproductive.
He continued: “Countries like Japan have a problem relationship with sleep because they’re pushing themselves so much at work. Britain is going the same way.
“The problem we have is people don’t see sleep as important.
“Nobody is making you watch the latest series of Game Of Thrones – sleep has become the thing we have to do, rather than want to do.
“If you change your attitude then you’ll notice the difference.”
Based on his years of experience, Dr Neil here draws on key advice from his book How To Sleep Well to help you make the most of your time between the sheets. EVERYBODY is different, and so we need different methods of achieving relaxation.
Dr Neil said: “Obvious things like drinking coffee just before bed should be avoided. “Exercise late at night is also a barrier to sleep. “Essentially, you need your body to be physically ready to lie still for the next eight hours or so.
“That also means large meals and alcohol just before bed can affect you getting to sleep.”
