SUPERMAN ‘KILLED BY ANTIBIOTIC’
SUPERMAN star Christopher Reeve died from an allergic reaction to antibiotics, a new documentary claims.
Leading US pathologist Dr Michael Hunter believes this reaction may have triggered a series of “catastrophic events,” including a massive heart attack that plunged him into a coma from which he never recovered.
Reeve’s death in 2004 at the age of 52 is still shrouded in mystery.
Dr Hunter revealed that the actor’s death certificate will not be publicly available until 2029.
He added: “There is no investigation or post mortem report or any official findings from a Medical Examiner. There were no blood or urine tests and only conflicting accounts as to the underlying cause of his death.”
Dr Hunter believes that media reports at the time suggesting sepsis or pneumonia played a part are wide of the mark.
Reeve displayed none of the symptoms, especially a raging fever.
According to accounts by both his wife Dana and several carers, Reeve appeared to go into anaphylactic shock before being raced to an intensive care unit.
Dr Hunter said: “This version tallies closely with the fact that Christopher had a series of allergies. If these accounts are correct, then it is highly possible that a toxic reaction to an antibiotic could have led to the death of America’s Superman.”
The actor was wheelchair-bound after a riding accident in 1995.
In a long-forgotten TV clip unearthed for the documentary Autopsy: The Last Hours Of….. Dana revealed that her husband suffered several such reactions over the years.
She added: “It was difficult because he could be administered a new drug two or three times and have no adverse reaction whatsoever and then, with the next dose, his body would reject it.”
Dr Hunter concludes: “Despite all the conflicting evidence, there is one certainty, his catastrophic riding accident was the beginning of the end.
“Chris never stopped believing in his own super powers but, having reviewed all the evidence, I think he did well to live for the nine years that he did. Sadly, this was a battle the Man of Steel could not win and his death at 52 was inevitable.”
