FANS of Coronation Street have been gripped by a tragic tale involving a character diagnosed with cancer while pregnant.

Sinead Tinker, played by Katie McGlynn in the ITV soap, undergoes life-saving treatment after being told she has cervical cancer.

Katie, 25, researched the heartbreaking storyline by working closely with charity Mummy’s Star, which is dedicated to women and their families affected by cancer during pregnancy. She said: “Corrie have been brilliant and introduced us to this charity.

“The founder made me feel like a fraud as his wife died from cancer 10 weeks after giving birth to their child. Throughout it all, I chatted to the charity and tried to channel my character. It’s sad and can be depressing, but I get to go home and I don’t have to live it.”

In the show, Sinead gives birth to son Bertie but then learns her cancer has spread and she needs radiotherapy. Viewers also see her struggling to adapt to motherhood and bond with her newborn baby.

The Daily Star Sunday has spoken to two mums through the charity Mummy’s Star who’ve gone through similar situations in real life.
