Waghorn doubles up to join 100 club

- By JAMES NURSEY

NINETY-FIVE-year-old Reg Harrison led Derby out but it was Rams No.9 Martyn Waghorn who ended up getting a century.

Harrison was honoured as the last surviving member of County’s 1946 FA Cup-winning side after being given the freedom of the city.

Both the former winger and Derby boss Frank Lampard were then delighted at seeing Waghorn’s chalk up 100 career goals.

He opened the scoring before the break to take his tally into triple figures.

The ex-Sunderland trainee later added his eighth of the season 19 minutes from time in a dominant home display.

Waghorn, a £5milllion summer signing from Ipswich, was then replaced by debutant Ashley Cole to a great ovation.

Lampard said: “Martyn is fantastic for me in the dressing room and for what he gives off to the rest of the squad.

“More than that, it’s the quality on the pitch – it’s a big number of goals. Long may they continue for us. “It was two great finishes. “He gave everything, an all-round performance of workrate and quality.”

But Hull could have led had Kamil Grosicki not scuffed an effort on to the post from Fraizer Campbell’s pass.

Derby took control after the let-off as Tom Huddlestone put two efforts just over while Tigers keeper David Marshall had to stretch to claim Fikayo Tomori’s header from Harry Wilson’s free-kick.

Marshall was called into action again diving to his left to hold Duane Holmes’ deflected shot.

Holmes’ clever reverse pass played in Waghorn who scored at the second attempt with his left foot after Marshall saved his initial effort four minutes before half-time.

He struck again after brilliant work by full-back Jayden Bogle on the right.

The youngster chased down a lost cause, nutmegged Kevin Stewart on the byline and crossed for Waghorn to score with a low right-foot finish from 12 yards.

Hull boss Nigel Adkins said: “We hit the post early on which could have changed the complexion of the game.”
