Fans complain Del Boy live show is TOO funny

- EXCLUSIVE by ED GLEAVE

PLONKERS are moaning that the new Only Fools And Horses musical is too funny.

Some fans laugh so loudly at the gags it annoys other audience members.

One woman who went to see a preview last week plans to ask for a refund because she could barely hear the on-stage action over all the giggling.

She said: “I’m tempted to ask for my money back because it’s so bloody annoying.

“My husband’s a huge fan and even he said ‘nothing is that bloody funny’.” The musical, based on the sitcom, began preview shows in London’s West End on February 9.

It is already proving a hit with those who have seen it ahead of the official opening night at Theatre Royal Haymarket on Tuesday.

The stars of the show, including Paul Whitehouse, Tom Bennett and Ryan Hutton have been playing to capacity crowds. And fans have called it “absolutely brilliant” and “genius” online.

Paul, 60, was nervous about taking on the project because Only Fools is loved by so many. He wrote the script with Jim Sullivan, the son of the sitcom’s writer John.

Paul said: “I met Jim and I was very conscious of how precious the legacy was to him and his family – and for me too, as someone who loved the series.

“It has been a lovely exercise, even if it has resulted in a few sleepless nights.”

The show includes classic lines from the sitcom is packed with nostalgia.

Paul said: “The late 80s was a time when London was developing and the gentrification of the yuppies was beginning and I wanted to make a point about how much has changed.

“I also had the idea that Trigger could look into the future in his granny’s crystal ball and he sees the London we live in now. Seeing artisan bakers and vintage clothiers. As a section, it will hit home with people how much has changed.”

Paul had already had backing from original Only Fools stars Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst.

He met them years ago and discovered they were big fans of his comedy hit The Fast Show.

He said: “I met David and Nick at a couple of BBC dos and they were both lovely. Because The Fast Show was really at its height when I met them and they really liked it, they were doing my characters back to me.”
