BROOKIE’S HARDMAN TO JOIN EASTENDERS Scouse legend is back in the big time

-

A BROOKSIDE legend is heading for Albert Square.

Paul Usher has landed a guest role on EastEnders.

He will play a hardman in a string of episodes this spring.

A show insider said: “Producers were keen to get Paul on board.

“It is only a for a short stint but they wanted to make sure they cast the right actor and they thought he was perfect for the role.”

Paul, pictured right with Brookie star Claire Sweeney, made his name playing Barry Grant on Brookside more than 36 years ago.

He played the role on and off until the soap’s final episode in 2003.

Fans also know him for playing DS Des Taviner on The Bill for three years until 2004.

Since then, he has had just a handful of minor roles. Landing a spot on EastEnders marks a big return to primetime TV for him.

A source said: “Paul is thrilled to be back on a big show. Even if it’s a small role, it’s still a very big deal for him.

“He cannot wait for his episodes to air.”

Paul will be at the centre of the action in a dramatic storyline with the Mitchells. He is due to film scenes with Steve McFadden, who plays Phil, and Max Bowden, who has taken over the role of Ben.

A show insider said: “There is a lot of drama ahead for the Mitchells. Some of the stuff coming up will really keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

“Paul’s character will be involved in some dark scenes with Phil and Ben.”

Paul has been hired by new boss Kate Oates.
