Maupay’s the merrier after Bees’ big win

- By DAVID HYDE

BRENTFORD manager Thomas Frank reckons he faces a fight to keep Neal Maupay this summer.

The Frenchman scored one and created another in a week where he won the EFL London Player of the Year.

Maupay has scored 23 this season and Frank wants him to push on – even if it means losing him in the future.

He said “I want 25 goals from him now.

“You can say we are a selling club but maybe there are only 10 clubs in the world who are not selling clubs.

“When you do well you will attract attention. I know that our players want to stay and develop and who knows what will happen in the future.

“I am very, very pleased because we are a young side who are growing in every aspect of the game and this was a comfortable 3-0.”

After a scrappy first half, where Said Benrahma fluffed the only chance of note, the game kicked into life five minutes into the second half.

Referee Keith Stroud pointed to the spot for Brentford when Ollie Watkins collided with Grant Hall and Maupay converted.

Benrahma was foiled two minutes later when keeper Joe Lumley smothered his effort, while the QPR stopper kept out a 62nd-minute header by Henrik Dalsgaard.

However, the Algerian doubled the lead after 72 minutes when he connected to a cross by Maupay.

Sergi Canos finished the game off with virtually the last kick of the game with a deflected shot from the edge of the box.

QPR boss Steve McClaren felt the first goal changed the game, a comedown after their heroics over Leeds last week.

He said “We conceded after two or three minutes, first goal is always important. I was disappointed from then on, we chased the game too much and we lost discipline.

“There was no leadership on the field, we chased the game too early and you are always going to get punished against a good Brentford team.

“I was elated on Tuesday night over Leeds with the performance and I’ve ended up as disappointed now as I was elated then.”
