Identity crisis for Kilbane

- By BRENDAN KEANE

ON days like Merseyside derby day, Kevin Kilbane wishes Everton had an identity.

Or at the very least he still wishes they had David Moyes and the type of men his old boss brought into the club – Steven Pienaar, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Sylvain Distin and Marouaine Fellaini.

Instead he looks at the

£340million the club has spent since Farhad Moshiri became their owner in February 2016 and wonders where the value is.

Even worse, he wonders where the MEN are.

Kilbane, 42 (below) – who played 121 times for the club under Moyes – said: “It’s often overlooked the quality that David Moyes brought to Goodison Park – they were topclass players – but aside from that, they were real men, real leaders. I don’t see a lot of that in Everton’s team right now.”

What he does see hurts him. One side of Merseyside are in a battle with Man City for the Premier League title, the other are in a battle with themselves to remain relevant.

“You look at Gylfi Sigurdsson and, okay, he has scored 11 goals this season but I don’t think he is having the kind of influence that a £45m player should be having,” said Kilbane.

“Andre Gomes looks talented but is inconsistent. If Paris Saint-Germain really are interested in paying

£35m for Idrissa Gueye, I’d snap their hand off. He is not near that level.

“What frustrates me about Everton is that I don’t know what I’m going to get any time I go there.

“I go to see Wolves and know what I am going to get, the same with Bournemouth and Burnley. But not Everton.”

Kevin Kilbane will appear as a pundit on Virgin Media the channel
