LET’S NOT FALL INTO TEMPER TRAP

- By JULIE STOTT

SPARKS could fly if two of rugby league’s feistiest players let rip with the verbal warfare today.

Hull KR’s Danny McGuire and Wakefield’s Danny Brough have three yellow cards for dissent between them already this year.

Throw in the poor discipline of a Rovers side who finished with only 10 men against Castleford last week and tempers could get frayed.

But Rovers half-back McGuire insists it is time to try to stop shooting from the lip.

He said: “Our discipline has been pretty good but you get frustrated at times and sometimes you overstep the boundary.

“Refs are clamping down and I understand it is a tough job but players get frustrated.”

The ex-Leeds star was yellow-carded for mouthing off late in the 32-16 defeat by Castleford, with Weller Hauraki and James Greenwood also in the sin-bin for interference and fighting respectively.

McGuire – acting skipper in place of Joel Tomkins who was serving a two-match ban for abusing an official – said it was a result of heading to a third defeat in five games.

They will need to be more controlled today against a Wakefield side who have won their last two games but who also have their own disciplinary issues.

An off-season signing from Huddersfield, scrum-half Brough (above) is notoriously gobby and was sin-binned in their opening two games for dissent. McGuire, 36, admits he is not too surprised because it is part of Brough’s fierce competitive streak.

He said: “We are the same age and I’ve played against Danny all my career and also when we were young.

“He’s always been passionate and can sometimes overstep the mark like I do. You try to stay calm but sometimes it doesn’t work out that way.”

Wakefield lost the two games in which Brough’s temper got the better of him and McGuire admits Rovers need to worry if the former Scotland star stays calm as that is usually a sign that things are going Trinity’s way. McGuire added: “He’s a key player for them and you have to watch him closely. His kicking
