STEADY DALE WON’T FAIL

- CHRIS HATHERALL

DALE STEPHENS is ready to silence his Brighton doubters by calmly steering Albion to FA Cup victory at a raucous Den this afternoon.

The long-serving midfielder (right) has been a huge part of Brighton’s success story but continues to suffer criticism on social media over playing too many sideways passes.

But after receiving public backing from manager Chris Hughton, Stephens believes his calm, steady approach could prove vital in South London.

He said: “I’ve heard the criticism but it’s water off a duck’s back. I’ve had similar situations at other clubs.

“I think it’s because of the sort of player I am. I’m not going to get fans on the edge of their seats. But I fully understand the role I have in the team – and keeping the ball will be important at Millwall.”

That view is shared by Hughton who outlined just how important Stephens, 29, is if Albion want to reach the FA Cup Semi-Finals. “I’ve never had any doubts about him,” said the Brighton boss. “He’s got a strong personality and he’s a very efficient player. He’s hugely important to the team. We’re going into an FA Cup tie where you expect the home crowd to be very, very vocal.

“You need players who make good decisions. In that central midfield area we’ll need composure and that’s what Dale brings.”
