HURRICANE TO BATTER BRITAIN It’s a floody awful end to the summer

- By FELICITY CROSS

HURRICANE Humberto is about to blast away the last of the summer heatwave.

The 125mph storm, currently raging across the island of Bermuda, is set to blow in tomorrow night.

Yesterday’s scorching weather saw Tesco sell an estimated 350,000 packs of bangers as people fired up their barbecues for a final time this year.

More than 30,000 sun-worshippers squeezed on to Brighton beach, with

20,000 more basking in Blackpool. Today is poised to be the hottest September 22 since records began in

1841. The mercury will top 26C in parts of the UK, although some areas of the north-west are due to see wet and windy weather.

Weathermen have warned summer is finally over with gusts of 50mph and torrential rain set to roll in.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “The weekend’s late September sizzle has felt like midsummer for some but we’re switching to autumn, with 50mph gales possible in a blustery week ahead.” Gales and rain will hammer England throughout the week, with the south and west worst affected.

Flood warnings were issued, with Manchester put on alert.

Ex-BBC and Met Office forecaster John Hammond of weathertrending said: “Our bubble is about to burst. Boosted by ex-Hurricane Humberto, the jet stream will fling bouts of wet and windy weather across the UK through the week. It’s appropriate for the autumn equinox.”

Forecasters admitted there was no way of predicting where the storms might hit.

And Hurriacane Humberto soon be followed by Storm Jerry.

A Met Office forecaster added: “There is going to be a change in the weather from today when we move to a more unsettled, mobile pattern as low pressure starts to come in.

“But early October may bring some fine and settled weather with warmer days.” will
