OF LIGHT IN BATTLE WITH DARK ARTS

-

that are trying to use dark arts. It’ll be a chess game.

“It’s easier to stop a running back than it is to stop a quarterback.

“He can’t get his body banged up. Let’s be real, he’s touching the ball a lot and when you do that, you attract a lot of attention.

“He currently has all the attention because Cam Newton went down and he was their best player.

“The question is, will McCaffrey’s body hold up?

“All you’ve got to do is load the box. Hit, after hit, after hit can really take its toll on you.

“Whatever team, whether it’s Tampa Bay or someone else, if they’re able to stop McCaffrey then it’s a copycat league.

“Everyone after that will use the same scheme.”

McCaffrey’s stunning figures have fuelled speculation that he could be a serious contender for the NFL’s prestigious Most Valuable Player award at the end of the season. But Williams says the rising star faces stiff competition from the league’s elite quarterbacks – especially given the Panthers’ erratic form.

“At this point he’s in the running, but he wouldn’t be the pick right now,” Williams added.

“It’s hard to be an MVP and be playing for an 8-8 team. Kansas City quarter-back Patrick Mahomes is leading that race right now.

“McCaffrey’s going up against quarterbacks that are winning. Even Jimmy Garoppolo in San Francisco is in the MVP talk – and he hasn’t really done anything.

“It’s only because the 49ers are undefeated.

“Tom Brady is always a contender and the New England Patriots are undefeated as well.

“But can he overcome them with the team winning? Yes.”
