IT’S THREESY FOR GARETH

- SIMON MULLOCK

ENGLAND boss Gareth Southgate could return to the tactical blueprint that took his team to the World Cup semifinals in his bid for Euro glory.

Southgate has admitted that he is prepared to think again after ditching the three-man defensive system that served the Three Lions so well in Russia last summer.

His plan to employ two holding midfielders to protect his back-four backfired as England suffered their first qualifying defeat in over a decade with a 2-1 loss in the Czech Republic on Friday night.

And while Southgate believes a lack of preparation time hinders his options for tomorrow night’s clash against Bulgaria in Sofia, he will not be afraid to go back to the drawing board as he plots the best way to use his resources during next year’s finals.

Asked whether he will revisit a formation to include wing-backs, Southgate said: “Yes. It’s certainly something we’ve considered and I don’t think we can dismiss it.

“I think we are in a difficult situation in terms of the players who play that system regularly for their clubs – and that was one of the reasons we didn’t do it on Friday night.

“I’m not sure if it’s the right thing ahead of Monday but we’re very aware and assessing those things.

“It’s something we should consider.

“We have to keep reflecting on what’s working, what is possible and how to learn from every experience we have.”

Southgate is likely to make a number of changes tomorrow. Harry Winks is set to come in after the central midfield axis of Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice struggled in

Prague.

Ben Chilwell will replace the suspended

Danny Rose.

Marcus

Rashford, Trent AlexanderArnold, Joe

Gomez and

Ross Barkley are also in Southgate’s thinking.
