Woody’s managing pressure

HAPPY HOUR : Cantwell after putting the visitors ahead

MARCO SILVA claimed it was not the right time to talk about his future as Everton boss after Toffees fans called for his head yesterday.

The Blues boss said he had to “respect” the reaction following an embarrassing home defeat by Norwich that was met by boos and chants of: “You’re getting sacked in the morning”.

The Toffees have now lost Premier League games this season after strikes from Todd Cantwell and Dennis Srbeny for the Canaries piled the pressure on Silva.

Toffees chairman Bill Kenwright was told by one fan to sack the Portuguese boss as he left the ground.

The message was simple from the irate supporter, ‘He’s got to go, Bill.’

But Silva said: “It is not the main thing to talk about individual positions or this and that.

“We have to look at what is best for the club. We have to respect the reaction. I can imagine how they felt when they scored the second goal.

“If we are disappointed in the afternoon, I imagine they are. It is normal they look to the manager.

“I respect their feelings. It is not the first time they felt as they did this afternoon.”

It was a horrible atmosphere inside

Goodison Park at the end but, while they pointed their anger at Silva, the players also have to hang their heads.

This was a horror performance and it came against a Canaries side that had just one point from their previous six away games in the Premier League and lost six of their last seven at home and on the road.

Yet here they lifted themselves off the bottom of the table with a gutsy display.

Everton were all over the place at the back in the first half and it did not improve after the break as shoddy defending in the 54th minute was punished.

Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate made a pathetic attempt to get the ball off Teemu Pukki but neither of them stopped him and he slid in Cantwell, who fired low past Jordan Pickford.

Goodison continued to groan and moan, frustrated with their team and with Norwich’s time-wasting.

Richarlison fired one into the side netting before Cenk Tosun forced Tim Krul into his best save of the afternoon. Nobody was on hand to get to the rebound. Silva opted to bring on Dominic Calvert-Lewin over £25million summer signing Moise Kean.

When sub Srbeny trotted through the Everton defence in stoppage time and slid home the second, the boos swirled round the ground.

It got worse for Silva when the home crowd also joined in the away fans when they started a chant of: “You’re getting sacked in the morning”.

Silva will be hoping that is not the case.

Norwich boss Daniel Farke was left to savour his side’s third win of the campaign and their first since they beat Manchester City on September 14.

He said: “We know we are still the favourites to finish bottom.

“But we showed today if we can stick together we have a chance to win any game and create something sensational by staying in this league.”
