Fletcher double real sickener for Bowyer

- Allan Saint-Maximin C Kavanagh By IVAN SPECK

THE Charlton takeover cannot come quickly enough for boss Lee Bowyer after a sickness bug swept through his side and saw them slump to their fourth defeat in five games.

Bowyer had two players withdraw from the squad before boarding the coach to The Valley and was able to name only five subs.

To make matters worse, young Charlton midfielder Albie Morgan was vomiting both before kick-off and at half-time.

The East Street Investments takeover still has to be ratified by the EFL but should be completed in time for Bowyer to bolster his squad in January.

He said: “It was a tough day.

“We’ve got enough injuries but then to chuck in a few illnesses as well doesn’t help.

“It was a bit of everything. Sickness, diarrhoea, not good.

“Ben Purrington was down to start but he was ill just before we got on the coach.

“Then Albie Morgan was sick. He couldn’t move in the end.”

Two late goals, a

Steven Fletcher penalty and an Atdhe Nuhui header, gave the Owls a victory which lifted Garry Monk’s side towards the play-offs.

Fletcher guided home a header from a Barry Bannan cross but Macauley Bonne levelled when his deflected shot squirmed beyond Cameron Dawson.

In the 80th minute, Fletcher calmly converted a penalty after Erhun Oztumer had lunged in on sub Jacob Murphy and in the dying seconds Nuhui headed home an Adam Reach cross.

Monk said: “I think it was a deserved win.

“Lee’s team fought, ran and made it difficult for us. I thought we stood up to that well.”
