The band famously started out as painters and decorators before finding fame.

After original member Lockie Chapman left last year, they called on Jay James, who not only had the right voice but also the necessary trade skills.

From the tour bus, Mike Crawshaw told me: “He’s got a great voice, but we went around his house and it was lovely. He said he decorated it.

“Whether he was lying, I don’t know. But if he did he’s a dab hand with a paint brush, so that sold it.” In all seriousnes­s, Jay has slotted right in with the boys.

Mike went on: “We’ve known Jay for as long as The Overtones have been going. Our paths have crossed several times at charity football matches and we both recorded a song on a Samaritans’ charity album, Save A Life.

“What we loved about him is he has the same work ethic and his banter is great – the fans see that when we are on stage.”
