BROTHER AND SISTER SAMUEL & ROMILLY GO 700 MILES TO VISIT PUB CALLED... SAMUEL ROMILLY

- By

A FAMILY travelled 700 miles to a Wetherspoon pub that shared the names of their two children.

Parents Karen and Martin Green could not believe their eyes when they saw the Sir Samuel Romilly while on their computer.

So they got son Samuel, 14, and his sister Romilly, 12, into the car and headed off to take a look.

Bar bosses were so gobsmacked at how far the family had travelled that they treated them as VIP guests.

Their trek began with the six-hour, 350-mile journey from their home in Consett, County Durham, to the pub in Barry, south Wales, before staying in a hotel overnight then returning north the next morning.

Mum Karen, 50, said: “The whole experience was surreal – we’ll never forget it. We had a lovely meal and they made a real fuss of us.

“It will be wonderful to return there when the kids are older with children of their own.”

Karen said it was the ITN newsreader Romilly Weeks who was the secret inspiration behind the bizarre family tale.

She said: “When I was pregnant with my first child it was around the time of the London bombings and I kept seeing Romilly Weeks on television reading the bulletins.

“I loved her name because it was so unusual, and decided if I had a girl that would be her name.

“But along came a boy. When I had my second one two years later it was a girl, so I was thrilled to be able to get my little Romilly.”

Samuel Romilly’s family had links with the development of Barry back in the late 1800s.

Last night, a Wetherspoon spokesman said: “We’re delighted that they enjoyed their visit to us.”
