It’s not a Vard decision for Phil

- ■ by STEVE BATES

JAMIE VARDY should come out of international retirement and play for England at Euro 2020.

That’s according to Burnley defender Phil Bardsley, who comes up against the red-hot Leicester striker today.

Vardy, 33, called it a day with England after making just one start at the 2018 World Cup.

But after scoring 17 goals in 20 Premier League games this season, Bardsley reckons the in-form striker (below) should reconsider.

He said: “If I was in his shoes I’d definitely consider it because it’s a major tournament and I really think England have got a chance this summer.

“I don’t know Jamie too well but it would be interesting to see where his head is at with England.

“Maybe enough really is enough for him.

I think he was probably getting fed up with going away and not playing enough minutes.

“He’s the main man for Leicester but when you go to England there are a lot of main men.

“If you are looking at form then he’s got to come under consideration.

“He’s an outstanding talent. He went through a patch when the team played a different style and it didn’t suit him.

“We know with Vardy he could be anonymous for 85 minutes and then he comes alive.

“That’s the way all prolific strikers are. You’ve got to be on your guard at all times and we’ll certainly have to be at our best to stop him.”

Burnley have lost their last four league games but Bardsley says boss Sean Dyche and the players aren’t panicking.

“I’ve been in this situation a few times,” he added.

“We all believe in our methods and we can be difficult opponents for anyone. We’ve got 24 points which is a decent return in terms of where we were last year.

“When we play at home we fancy ourselves against anybody and today will be no different.”
