500-mile icy plume blows in from Greenland

- By

SNOW is on the way as battered Britain endures a third weekend of storms.

A 500 mile-wide plume of cold air from Greenland will bring winter’s “sting in the tail” as the south-east faces its first falling snow for a year.

The Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Winter threatens a sting in the tail, with cold air from near Greenland pushing the snow risk the furthest south it’s been all winter.

“Home counties’ higher ground could see flakes.”

And heavy rain – particularly in northern England and southern

Wales – today and tomorrow will bring even more misery to flooded parts of the country following storms Ciara and Dennis.

Temperatures will dip on Tuesday and Wednesday to 4C, bringing heavy sleet and snow showers in the north and west of England. Scotland could have up to four inches of snow.

Met forecaster Greg Dewhurst said: “Hail, sleet and snow are on the way and there will still be winds around.”

Yesterday, the Environment Agency had 90 flood warnings in place, as well as 153 flood alerts. They covered areas from Wiltshire to Cumbria.

Flooding was reported across the southern edge of the Yorkshire Dales on Friday night, with the village of Hortonin-Ribblesdale cut off.

Four people were helped to safety from a stranded vehicle in Skipton.

A “crocodile” terrified people yesterday when it was spotted in floodwater. But it turned out to be a garden ornament which had washed up outside a hotel in Worcester.

Brown’s hotel manager Richard Key, 53, said: “I thought it had escaped from a safari park.”
