Weathermen promise 3-month spring sizzle
WE could be heading for one of our hottest springs ever, with a “sub-tropical” Easter.
Forecasters have predicted temperatures could hit 24 degrees.
The spring sizzle is set to start soon, with the mercury climbing to 16C in some parts over the coming days.
After that, we could see a stretch of sunny spells until June.
Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze said: “Long-range forecasts show 24C would be expected from later in the Easter period.
“South-westerly winds are likely to pull up sub-tropical air at times.
“With models strongly backing a warm spring, the record for the hottest spring is expected to come under pressure.”
Met Office forecasts say it is 10 times more likely to be warmer than normal and could be the hottest spring we have seen in 136 years.
A new record is possible, with the highest April temperature currently 22.8C, logged at Cambridge Observatory in 1892.
The Met Office said there is a “relatively high probability” of wellabove-average temperatures over the three months of spring, with “pleasantly warm days” over Easter.
It will be a welcome break after the winter washouts and floods.
A Met Office forecaster added: “Temperatures will recover to generally mild, and drier and brighter conditions may spread to most parts through much of next week.
“March 26 to April 9 is forecast to see pleasantly warm days, with temperatures generally near or somewhat above average.
“More widely settled conditions are likely to continue.”
And the Met Office’s Marco Petagna said: “Computer model output looks more promising in the weeks ahead for more sunshine and perhaps warmth.”
The weather service’s spring forecast to businesses and councils said: “March-May has good agreement between the Met Office and other centres around the world for an increased chance of more frequent westerly or south-westerly winds.”
STV weather presenter Sean Batty said: “There’s plenty to look forward to in the coming weeks. It will feel pleasant by day in the sunshine.”
