Defeat in Madrid was Final straw insists Ginola

- ■ by NICK CALLOW

TOTTENHAM have been destined for failure from the moment they reached last season’s Champions League Final in Madrid.

That is the view of Spurs legend David Ginola – who claims the club was lucky in 2019 and has never been equipped to compete at the top level on a regular basis.

Tottenham went into the Premier League suspension destined to make it 12 years without a trophy after they were humbled 3-0 in Germany by RB Leipzig in midweek.

The prospects of reaching the Champions League next season are a remote possibility at best.

And after replacing Mauricio Pochettino with Jose Mourinho things seem to be going downhill.

Former Premier League Footballer of the Year and France star Ginola (above) said: “It was the worst-case scenario for Tottenham to play in the Champions League Final last year.

“It was great for the fans, great for the club, great for everyone at the club but it put them on a stage they weren’t really ready for.”

And that 2-0 defeat to Liverpool, Ginola said, was the beginning of the end.

Setting an unrealistically high standard did for Pochettino and has proved tough for even the experienced managerial skills of serial winner Mourinho.

Ginola added: “You can’t forget that over the last few years Tottenham have been struggling to get trophies and that was the problem for Pochettino. “It’s a shame because he did a great job – but because he wasn’t winning anything, people were complaining. “The issue is they were too quick to reach the final of the Champions League.

“You have to win things in your home country first before going abroad and winning trophies.

“Spurs now need a team which is consistent enough to be able to play at the top level year in year out.”
