STAGE INVADERS
From Oscars to Crufts, we list TV’s top demos
CAMERA, ACTION!
As the BBC Six O’Clock news was broadcast live on May 23, 1988, from London’s Television Centre, the programme was interrupted by lesbian rights activists angry at a ban on councils promoting homosexuality.
News presenter Nicholas Witchell helped subdue the invaders while Sue Lawley, inset, carried on reading the headlines.
BRIT OF A NERVE
In 1996, Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker climbed on the stage during Michael Jackson’s performance of Earth Song at the BRITs, flashing his bum.
The singer said: “My actions were a form of protest at the way Michael Jackson sees himself as some kind of Christ-like figure.”
STREAKER STRIKES
During the 1974 Oscars, activist
Robert Opel broke through security to run naked across the stage of the Los Angeles ceremony, flashing a “peace” sign as he went.
Oscars host David Niven joked that the only laugh the man would ever get would be “by stripping off and showing his shortcomings”.
HAVING A POP
As British Eurovision entry SuRie sang at the
2018 contest, rapper Dr AC breached security and grabbed her microphone before ranting about the Nazis and “freedom”.
He also disrupted the final of TV’s The Voice in 2017.
RAP WRAP
Controversial rapper Kanye West caused uproar at the 2009 MTV Video Music awards when Taylor Swift won the Best Female Video prize.
He grabbed the mic to protest that Beyoncé had “one of the best videos of all time”. He was booed off.
DAD DEMOS
Members of campaign group Fathers 4 Justice invaded the live broadcast of National Lottery: Jet Set in May 2006, briefly forcing the show off air. The same outfit stormed the set of ITV’s Loose Women in June 2016.
HAIR-RAISING
In the same year, DJ Calvin Harris invaded the stage on The X Factor during a performance by Jedward. He was wearing a pineapple on his head. The star said he wanted to mock the show’s “frightening stranglehold’’ on the music charts.
KEIRA Knightley’s new film Misbehaviour tells how women’s lib protesters disrupted the 1970 Miss World beauty pageant.
Comedian Bob Hope was hosting the event at the Royal Albert Hall in London when flour, smoke bombs and fruit were thrown at the stage and ink fired from water pistols.
But that wasn’t the only time a top event has been thrown into complete chaos.
Here JAMES
MOORE tells us about 10 other stage invasion shockers.
WUFF MOMENT
When wonder whippet Tease was crowned Best In Show at Crufts in 2018, protesters from animal rights group Peta stormed the arena at the NEC in Birmingham, carrying signs alleging the event was cruel.
FLOWER POWER
Political campaigner Abbie Hoffman jumped on the stage during a set by The Who at Woodstock in 1969. Grabbing a mic he started protesting at the jailing of an activist, before guitarist Pete Townshend screamed, “F*** off my f **** ng stage!” and chased him away.
SPEECHLESS
In 2008, journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi threw his shoes at US President George W Bush in a protest about the Iraq War, while last year climate change protesters disrupted a Mansion House speech by Chancellor Philip Hammond.
