Carragher (below) tweeted: “Jurgen Klopp showed compassion for all at the start of this pandemic, senior players heavily involved in @premierleague players taking wage cuts. Then all that respect & goodwill is lost, poor this @ LFC.”

Reds skipper Jordan Henderson is at the forefront of an appeal urging his Premier League peers to donate money to help NHS staff fighting the pandemic.

Premier League bosses told players and officials from every top-flight club during a video conference call that the coronavirus crisis will cost more than £1billion.

The Premier League have calculated that a 30 per cent wage cut would see the cost of the crisis split between clubs and players.

But the PFA made it clear on Friday they will not accept lighter wage packets until they have been given access to club accounts.

At least one player from each Premier League club was involved in the conference call last night.

A PFA spokesman said: “It is our priority to finalise the precise details of our commitment as soon as possible.

“However, to achieve a collective position will take a bit more time.

“There should be no doubting the players and captains are committed to achieving this as soon as possible. They recognise their role in wider society and what they need to do.”

DIEGO MARADONA has accused clubs of using coronavirus as an excuse to treat players like slaves.

The World Cup-winning skipper, now coaching Gimnasia de La Plata, says some owners are using Covid-19 to stop paying what they can afford.

And Maradona, 59, has offered to set up a fund to help players and coaches who have been left in financial limbo by the suspension of matches.

He said: “There are some players who don’t have to be paid and we all know that. But there are also players who can’t play for free – even for a month – and the clubs should pay them.

“Some clubs are now playing stupid and want to take advantage of this moment to avoid paying.

“They have treated players like slaves for years.”
