Truckstop tot DAD MADE HGV FOR SON ALFIE

- By &

A PETROLHEAD dad built a remotecontrolled truck for his son from an old mobility scooter.

Dan Hull, 45, set about converting the scooter into an Eddie Stobart lookalike HGV two years ago.

Three-year-old Alfie now has a stunning, scaled-down truck that leaves his friends and neighbours in awe whenever they take it to the park for a spin.

It features an AH logo – standing for Alfie Hull – and comes with a trailer made out of recycled household objects which was built from scratch during the lockdown.

Dan, who works as a courier, has always loved building things and is constantly adding to his son’s favourite toy which is 21ft long and weighs about 200kg.

The qualified electrician began the project after he bought an old mobility scooter for £200.

But he says most of the truck was built using recycled materials he found online or around the house.

Dan said: “I’ve always been into building stuff and I had my heart set on building something my son could drive.

“He became interested in lorries, so naturally I thought I would go out and buy a mobility scooter and set about the project.

“The truck is fully radio-controlled and goes at about 7mph. Alfie tends to sit inside and I sit on the trailer, which I built during lockdown. I have full control over it as it’s too heavy and big for Alfie to drive just yet.

“He loves it and as soon as I get the truck out he wants to drive it everywhere.

“It stops traffic and people ask about it all the time.

“I even had one man say he came here especially to have a look at it. “Building is my hobby. I got it from my dad and I hope that one day I can pass that down to Alfie. “I’m currently building a monster truck, which is going to be big enough for us both to get in, using a motorbike engine and an old quad bike”.

Dan’s wife, Marian, 45, fully supports her husband’s hobby and has even let him turn their kitchen into a workshop.

Dan said: “She’s been really supportive of the whole project. When I was originally building it, I didn’t have a decent workshop so I built it in the kitchen.

“Now we tend to store the truck in the garage or in my lock-up”.
