Spoons fan pens poetry to fave pub

- By JOHN MAHONEY

TEACHER Helen Shenton is calling rhyme at her local Wetherspoons in honour of the nation’s boozers reopening.

The mum, who has won fans while performing poems at open mic nights, has penned one about the chain for the big event this coming Saturday.

Her latest work has so impressed Spoons’ bosses they are considering making her the group’s official Poet Laureate.

Helen has missed her favourite watering hole so much after nearly four months in lockdown that she crafted An Ode to Wetherspoon.

In it, she waxes lyrical with the lines: “Pubs are opening, they are, it’s true,

“I’m so excited to meet up with you, Of course we’ll keep the one metre rule,

“Arms stretched without the touch, we’ll get our favourite seats, with a bit of luck.”

And the poem closes: “See your face in our familiar place. Wetherspoon, I’m getting ready, “Familiar chatter, perhaps some news on telly.

“Yes, there’s no denying it, I cannot lie, I’m ecstatic about the 4th of July.” Mum-of-three Helen, 58, is already dreaming of sipping a glass of red wine again at the Spinning Mule in her home town of Bolton, Lancs.

She added: “My writing is mainly about observing people, with their behaviour and interaction. And the pub has to be one of the best places to experience that. I just can’t wait!”

A Wetherspoon spokesman hailed Helen for her poem, saying: “She’s our very own Poet Laureate.

“It’s great that she’s spreading the word.”
