Give your barbie that extra sizzle

- By STEVE GUY B&Q’s gardening expert

SPENDING more time at home while the weather is warm and sunny is a recipe for barbecue success.

As soon as the temperature rises, I can’t wait to fire up ours and get cooking outdoors.

Here are some key ingredients to really impress diners – family or guests within your “bubble”.

First, get your barbecue going. Charcoal models aren’t the divas they once were, with many easystart options available.

Firelighters and a chimney starter will soon have it roaring.

A hot plate-style plancha is also a simple set-up for outdoor cooking as its flat surface is ideal for charring veggies.

For the best grilling experience, having the right tools also helps.

Look for long-handled tongs and ensure the grips are heat resistant.

Expand your kit with a thermometer for more precision cooking or try reusable skewers for versatile kebabs.

Grow your own herbs? Turn your dishes up a notch with homegrown flavours and aromas.

Woody varieties such as rosemary, thyme and sage work brilliantly.

Try creating your own basting brush by tying a few stems of these herbs together and dipping them into your favourite sauce or marinade.

Switch up steaks and sausages with a taste of the Med – how about adding a pizza oven or stones to your BBQ armoury?

For cleaning up, I recommend using a wire brush and specific cleaning spray to remove grease, ready for your next round of burgers.
