EMMET FULFILS DERBY DREAM

Rivals tread water behind Serpentine

- By CHRIS GOULDING

STUNNED silence greeted the result of yesterday’s Investec Derby in more ways than one after a 25-1 chance Serpentine made all the running in the hands of Emmet McNamara.

For the first time since the race first took place in 1780, the classic took place behind closed doors.

If the public had been allowed to attend, they would also have been in for a further shock. Khalifa Sat, a 50-1 shot, finished second with 66-1 chance Amhran Na Bhfiann taking third place.

But it was no surprise that the winning trainer was Aidan O’Brien, who made history by taking the blue riband event for a record eighth time.

McNamara, 30, who was having his first ride in the race, said: “I did not believe I would be winning the Derby. It’s a bit surreal really, I can’t believe it.”

It was McNamara’s first winner since October and when it was also pointed out the champion apprentice in 2008 faces a 14-day quarantine on his return to Ireland, he said: “I don’t care if it’s 14 months!”

O’Brien said: “We are so delighted but we’re in a privileged position to have such unbelievable horses and to work with and for such special people.”

Kameko, sent off the 5-2 favourite, never had a look in, like some many of the runners, and finished fourth”

And Frankie Dettori offered no excuses for second favourite English King, who came home in fifth place.

Dettori said: “I had a good trip but he was just inexperienced.”

The remarkable O’Brien had already landed the Oaks as Love conquered all again. The 1000 Guineas winner, partnered by Ryan Moore (left) became the 49th filly to complete the classic double.

Victory had looked far from certain when her stablemate Passion and Tiempo Vuela roared off in front.

But the exertions had taken their toll and two furlongs out, they were treading water when Moore gave Love her head and it was then just a question of how far she won by.

At the line, nine lengths separated Love and the second home, Ennistymon, her stablemate.

Frankly Darling finished under Dettori.

Moore said: “Love was exceptional. We always thought she was very good. She proved that in the Guineas and took another step forward. She loved this extended trip. You never expect to win an Oaks by that far.” third
