RIP OUR JACK

Charlton, World Cup winner and giant of footie, dies at 85

TRIBUTES have been paid to World Cup-winning football legend Jack Charlton after he died “peacefully” aged 85.

Footballers, clubs and fans joined his family in sharing fond memories of the defender, who helped England to victory at Wembley in 1966 with his younger brother, Bobby.

His family said: “Jack died peacefully on Friday. He was at home in Northumberland, with his family by his side.

“As well as a friend to many, he was a much-adored husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

“We cannot express how proud we are of the extraordinary life he led and the pleasure he brought to so many people in different countries and from all walks of life.

“He was a thoroughly honest, kind, funny and genuine man who always had time for people. His loss will leave a huge hole.”

His grand-daughter Emma Wilkinson, who works for ITV News, said: “Grandad has led a very atypical life. But to us he has only ever been Grandad, a man who mastered international football management but could never operate the television remote.”

TV pundit Gary Lineker told of Charlton’s “wonderfully infectious personality”. Broadcaster Danny Baker shared a touching story about the player waking up after the World Cup final. He signed off: “Goodnight, giant.”

Charlton, who also had a stint as Republic of Ireland manager, suffered from dementia and was diagnosed with lymphoma last year.

The player, born in Ashington, Northumberland, started at Leeds as a groundsman before starring all his career for the Yorkshire club.

He made history when he lifted the Jules Rimet Trophy after beating West Germany in the final.

The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation yesterday thanked Charlton for his generous support over the years, despite ill health.

Lady Elsie, who was widowed by Sir Bobby in 2009, said: “He’d meet with fundraisers and people were always so thrilled to meet a World Cup winner.”
