Eagles saved by son swoop

- ■ by JAMES DESBOROUGH

EAGLES legend Don Henley credits his late songwriting partner Glenn Frey’s son with helping to save the band.

Henley asked Deacon Frey to join after he performed at a memorial for his dad. He said it would have been impossible for them to keep going after the death of the singer-songwriter if they hadn’t recruited “family blood”.

The drummer and singer watched Deacon, now 24, deliver a moving rendition of Peaceful Easy Feeling at the 2016 service.

Henley, 72, said of the youngster’s performance: “He was so brave and composed,

“I’m sure on the inside he was churning. After a few months went by I thought, ‘Why not see if he would like to be in the band?” Deacon joined for their summer 2018 tour and now has an “open door” to stay with them. Henley said the future of Eagles had looked in doubt when Frey died of pneumonia four years ago at the age of 67.

He said: “The only way it felt justified to me was to have family blood in the band.”
