FLEETWOOD Mac co-founder Peter Green has died aged 73.

The legendary guitarist passed away “peacefully in his sleep”, his solicitors Swan Turton announced yesterday.

Former Whitesnake guitarist Bernie Marsden last night led the tributes.

The 69-year-old said: “I can’t quite express my feelings this afternoon after learning of Peter’s death.

“I’m just thinking of the times we spent together in the last couple of years, hanging out with him was very special. A memory I’ll cherish. He made me laugh, cry, wonder, and never failed to make me pinch myself when we were alone one-toone. There I was, sat with my hero.

“As a musician I can only be one of the millions he touched. His talent for guitar playing, vocals and harmonica would have been more than most people could have possibly wished for, and then you add those wonderful songs – original, vibrant, atmospheric, psychedelic and so much fun, to listen to and witness.”

London-born Peter formed the band with Mick Fleetwood and Jeremy Spencer in 1967 and they had hits with tracks such as Albatross and Oh Well.

But he developed mental health problems and quit the band in 1970. He was later diagnosed with schizophrenia.

The later version of the group went on to become a multi-platinum act whose album Rumours is one of the best selling of all time.
