FURY AT WILEY RACE HATE Antisemitic rant probe
GRIME star Wiley is being probed by police over an antisemitic rant posted on his social media.
His manager John Woolf said he had “cut all ties” with the rapper, 41, after a long series of posts appeared on Wiley’s accounts yesterday and on Friday.
There was outrage when conspiracy theories and comments insulting the Jewish community were shared on the chart-topper’s Twitter and Instagram.
One post read: “Jewish people you make me sick.”
The Campaign Against Antisemitism last night said it had contacted the police.
A spokesman confirmed: “Our crime unit has reported this matter to the Metropolitan Police service as we consider that Wiley has committed the offence of incitement to racial hatred, which can carry a substantial prison sentence.”
The organisation has asked for Wiley, real name Richard Cowie Jr, to be stripped of his MBE. A number of celebrities also spoke out after the tirade.
Countdown star Rachel Riley, 34, said: “He could have just done a duet with Jedward if he was that keen to end his career. An unprompted public antisemitic breakdown is a bizarre route to go down.”
Rapper Example, 38, said: “F***inell Wiley why did you have to go out all guns blazing like this. One of my all-time favs. I can’t see a way back for you now. Even with an apology. 2020 is the year for repair not division.” Broadcaster and comedian David Baddiel, 56, called on Twitter bosses to take action.
He said: “I believe you can be suspended from here for tweets that twitter considers hate speech against various minorities.
“There’s been a lot of argument about what constitutes hate speech towards them. But one thing’s for sure: you can say whatever the f*** you like about Jews.”
And Labour MP Jess Phillips said: “This is dangerous stuff. Surely it should come down.” Wiley has since had a temporary ban from Twitter and some of his posts were censored. A spokesman for the social media giant said: “If we identify accounts that violate any of these rules, we’ll take enforcement action.” Wiley has also been dropped by A-List Management. His now ex-representative Mr Woolf explained: “Following Wiley’s antisemitic tweets today we have cut all ties with him. There is no place in society for antisemitism.”
A Met Police spokesman said: “We have received a number of reports relating to alleged antisemitic tweets posted on social media. The Met takes all reports of antisemitism extremely seriously. The relevant material is being assessed.” Wiley was contacted for comment.
