executive of the line based in Purfleet, Essex, said: “Only last year CMV was celebrating a record trading year and our first decade in cruising.’’

Newcastle gets overlooked as a city break destination, but if you are thinking of a staycation this summer it could be just the ticket.

Lively, cultured and very friendly, it is also a gateway to other gems such as the Northumberland National Park, quirky coastal town Whitley Bay and the resort of South Shields.

Newcastle Quayside Travelodge is in the heart of the city itself, with great views of the famous seven bridges. It’s a nine-minute walk from Central Station.

Travelodge began its hotel reopening programme this month, applying what it learned from operating a handful of locations serving key workers during the lockdown.

It has launched a safety and social distance programme called Travelodge Protect+ which means you’re all set for a safe stay.

There is extra cleaning of rooms and public areas, thermal disinfection of linen and towels, and hand sanitisers have been installed. Customer numbers in areas such as lifts are also monitored. I felt really safe, and none of those measures affected the comfort of my stay in any way.

The comfy bed and well thought-out design of the room were great. I loved the charging points next to the bed and the large TV. The contactless check-in also worked well.

The hotel serves a new version of its popular breakfast box for £5.25.

It has cornflakes with semi-skimmed milk, a flapjack bar, pain au chocolat and orange juice, plus tea and coffee in the room. The new system works well in the current climate.
