HENDO: I’LL GIVE EU MY ALL

- STEVE BATES

NEWLY CROWNED Footballer of the Year Jordan Henderson has vowed to give everything to make England Euro champions next year. Kop captain Henderson has spent a year leading Liverpool in their quest to end 30 years of league title misery.

And after landing their first Premier League, the Anfield leader, 30, was voted the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year.

But after lifting the Champions League last season and Fifa World Club Cup in December, Henderson still has unfinished business with England.

Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate has brilliant young players like Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood, Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho emerging with perfect timing for next summer’s delayed tournament.

And Henderson believes England may finally have the weapons to end years of anguish – like Liverpool have done – and finally deliver on the big stage.

“My motivation will never change, I’ll always want to improve. I’ll always want to win trophies whether that’s at Liverpool or with England,” said Henderson.

“And I will do that until I finish playing football.

“Of course England is a big opportunity with the talent and the players we have so I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping in any way I can.”

As much as Henderson’s FWA award was for his on-field efforts, his off-field contribution to the Players Together charity initiative was a significant factor too.

The Sunderland-born star was a driving force in engaging with the 19 other Premier League captains to raise money for the NHS.

He said: “We’re all really proud of what we did over that period and I think it made a big difference to all the NHS staff.

“What we’ve done so far is incredible. Not only for the NHS but for the Black Lives Matter campaign and the lead the players took on that side.

“I think it’s been a really powerful thing.”
