FOOD lovers could soon be able to print and grill their own burgers at home.

A plant-based burger has been created using the revolutionary 3D technology.

The patties are being tested in trials with a burger chain, and could be served to customers as soon as next year. The creators are also planning to make a machine which will allow people to print their own burgers at home.

Racheli Vizman, CEO of Israelibased SavorEats, said: “That’s our goal, where we can also have – next to a microwave – we can have machines that can create a variety of products.”

3D printing works by building a product layer by layer.

Designers produce a blueprint of what they want to make, then send it to the 3D printer, along with the raw materials.

SavorEat’s robot-based technology means that the burger prints and cooks simultaneously.

The vegan burger can be 3D printed and grilled in just six minutes, and uses ingredients which can be stored for six months without refrigeration.

Racheli added: “We’re printing one layer, then we cook one layer, print one layer, cook one layer. So at the end, you get something that’s ready to be consumed.

“The nice thing about that is that you can also control the way you cook it. You can decide whether you want it medium, you want in rare, or well done.”

Chicken chain KFC announced this week that it plans to start 3D printing “chicken” nuggets, with a launch date in Russia already set for next year.
