NO NONSENSE: Pontus Jansson won’t mess about on Tuesday night

BRENTFORD skipper Pontus Jansson has vowed to cut out any fancy ball-playing tricks in Tuesday night’s Championship Play-Off Final.

The Sweden central defender, 29, admits his howler in Thursday night’s second leg of the Bees’ 3-2 aggregate semi-final win over Swansea at Griffin Park stemmed from his younger days as a striker.

But Jansson, whose attempted backflick clearance led to Swansea scoring and a tense final few minutes for the West Londoners, is adamant there will be no repeat at Wembley against Fulham. The ex-Leeds and Malmo star said: “It’s always tough when you do a mistake like that but it happens to everyone.

“It’s always harder, though, when you’re the captain and the leader of the team.

“My main thing is to lead by example but it’s hard to lead anyone by example with a mistake like that one.

“The thing is I was striker until I was 20 so these stupid things are still my head.

“But I have to put them away and believe I will not do it again.

“I know what I did wrong and next time I know what to do – put the ball into the stands.” Jansson, who joined the Bees from Leeds last summer, reckons it is vital Thomas Frank’s side follow the Yorkshireman into the top flight in order to keep their exciting squad together. The Premier League big boys are poised to pounce for the likes of hot-shot Ollie Watkins should Brentford fail to beat their neighbours. Jansson added: “All 11 of our team could play in the Premier League and have had really good seasons – and our front guys are fantastic. “But we want to get there ourselves and then aim as high as possible – like Sheffield United have shown this season.”
