BOLTING TO A REC RD
We explore the wackiest world record efforts
STAIRCASE NUTCASE
American Justin Stewart holds the Guinness World Record for the most stairs climbed in 12 hours.
He shunned the lift in 2014 when he climbed a whopping seven miles’ worth of stairway in a single day.
100M CRAWL
Five years after Bolt dropped jaws with his 100-metre dash, Katsumi Tamakoshi completed the same distance on all fours.
The Japanese speed crawler set a record time of 15.86 seconds on a track at the athletics field at Komazawa Olympic Park, Tokyo.
FINGER PRESS-UPS
One alternative athlete used his finger power to propel him into the record books.
In 2011, Xie Guizhong did an astonishing 41 one-finger press-ups in 30 seconds in Beijing, China.
PINKIE PULL-UPS
India’s Maibam Itomba Meitei showed off ridiculous strength by lifting his body up to a bar using only his little fingers. He became a record holder for the most consecutive pinkie pull-ups – an incredible total of 16.
KINGPIN
Bowling supremo Chad McLean holds the world record for the most strikes in a single minute.
The American managed to topple ten pins before him nine times.
UNDERWATER LIFTER
Ex-professional swimmer Gerald Rioual beat the record for the most bench presses done underwater when he lifted a
110lb barbell
36 times in 90 seconds.
WALL RUNNER
German Amadei Weiland appeared to defy gravity when he ran 11ft
5.4in, horizontally along a wall, unassisted.
Since setting the world record in 2012, Weiland has built a
20,000 strong Insta following.
ON this day in 2009, Usain Bolt stunned the world by running 100m in just 9.58 seconds.
The Jamaican sprinter, now 33, broke his own record at the Berlin World Championships, and it remains one of the most iconic sporting moments.
But you don’t have to be super-speedy to get into the record books. Here, CHARLES WADE-PALMER looks at the wackiest world records in sport.
FOOTBALL HAND WALK
Zhang Shuang trained for three years to walk 50 metres on his hands with a football between his legs.
He set a world-record time of 26.09 seconds in 2016 at China West
Normal
University in Nanchong,
Sichuan.
HANDCUFFED SWIM
Elham Sadat Asghari spent nearly three hours swimming with hands bound together with police handcuffs.
To swim the now worldrecord distance of 4.2km she had to use mainly her legs to propel her body forward in Bushehr, Iran.
BASKETBALL SURF SPIN
Bernie Boehm spun a basketball on his finger for 33.25 seconds while surfing waves at Ponce Inlet in Daytona Beach, Florida, USA.
