High price of justice

-

IT will infuriate readers that the cost of keeping jihadi scumbag Hashem Abedi in jail could hit £10million.

Taxpayers will be dismayed that we will spend at least £240 a day to hold this disgusting human being.

That’s more than a five-star hotel next to Buckingham Palace – and the price could double because he is classed as a vulnerable prisoner.

Abedi was convicted of plotting the Manchester Arena bombing carried out by his brother, Salman, in 2017.

He was found guilty of murdering 22 children, women and men at an Ariana Grande concert and sentenced to a minimum of 55 years.

There will be many readers who say Abedi deserves to die for his sins, and we would save a few million pounds if Britain still had the death penalty.

Others will think Abedi will suffer far more by spending year after year in a prison cell – and that the last thing we need is more fundamentalist “martyrs”.

Whatever your view, the laws are unlikely to be overhauled soon.

So Abedi will be spending decades in jail and we will end up with a hefty bill.

What could be changed, however, is how he spends his time inside.

There is no reason a man so evil should be given access to luxuries.

Why should he have a TV and video games? He should think himself lucky that we feed him and let him shower.

The families of the victims will, we are sure, want this man punished. Not rehabilitated, not treated. Punished.

It’s up to the powers-that-be to ensure Abedi’s decades in prison feel like an eternity.

Very few people will mind if he is miserable every moment as he awaits the day when he burns in hell.
