Versatile Hendrick perfect for Toon

- By DAVID SNEYD

JEFF HENDRICK ticked all the right boxes for Newcastle.

A proven Premier League performer in a Burnley side that have established themselves in the division over the last four years, the former Claret is the definition of a utility midfielder.

The Republic of Ireland international has played wide right, in the centre, up front as a No.10 and even protecting the back four.

The fact that he was available on a free transfer was just the icing on the cake for owner Mike Ashley when he sanctioned a four-year contract for the Dubliner, 28.

And he came with a glowing reference from former international boss, Mick McCarthy.

He said: “Jeff was brilliant for me.

“He’s a very good player, he’s athletic, he’s got a good touch, he can see a pass and he’s got a goal in him.

“I said to Steve Bruce, ‘He’s all of those things and he’s around 6ft 1ins – so he can defend corner kicks as well’.

“I think there’s more to come from him as well, he’s got more to offer than he’s shown so far.”

New Ireland manager Stephen Kenny also has plans for Hendrick.

He said: “I see him as part of a midfield three, I don’t see him as the central holding player.

“He can play right or left of the midfield three. With Burnley, he was playing right of a four. I see him as one of midfield three, as one of the attacking two.

“James McCarthy and Harry Arter have been playing in that position for Crystal Palace and Fulham so I see Jeff as more of a right or left in a three.”

Kenny added: “I’ve not worked with him before, so I’m looking forward to that.

“There’s genuine competition in midfield.”
