TALKING WITH CLUBS IS KEY TO GIGGS PLAN

- By DAVE ARMITAGE

RYAN GIGGS says he’ll do everything in his power to make sure his Wales players don’t get crocked.

The Wales boss knows the manic state of football as it deals with the Covid-19 pandemic will present unique problems.

Man United legend Giggs knows better than anyone the club-v-country dilemma from his time at Old Trafford.

The ex-winger faced a barrage of criticism from Welsh fans over the years for the amount of games he missed in his 16-year international playing career.

He made his playing debut against Germany in 1991 but missed 18 consecutive friendlies before making his first friendly appearance against Finland nine years later.

Giggs (below) is mindful that he has a duty of care as manager and said said: “I’m sure I will do th things that upset club managers, because it’s always a bit of a balancing act.

“But we will definitely be trying to do the best we can with regard to training loads.”

Wales play Finland in Helsinki on Thursday followed by a home clash with Bulgaria at the weekend.

And the pressure will definitely be on as last season and the new campaign seemingly merge into each other with no pre-season to speak of.

Giggs added: “It’s going to be a case of monitoring the situation and that’s why it’s important to have a big pool of players to call on.

“We’ve got good communication with the clubs and we have to ensure that we look after players carefully.

“It’s not something you can get right every time but we do our best to look after players’ welfare. We don’t take any chances.

“I know a lot of the managers like Mikel Arteta and Frank Lampard because I’ve been on coaching courses with them.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen in the next few months anyway. We have to prepare as if the Euros are going ahead.

“You hope so but we’ve seen how quickly things can change. I will prepare for it but I’m aware things can change.”
