THE bacon butty tops the list of people’s favourite snacks, but millions are keeping their love of the treat a secret.

Almost half of the public (49%) said the sandwich is better than fruit and other healthier options.

However, 21% of those who tuck in lie about their indulgence to prevent them getting a telling-off from healthconscious partners.

They said they scoffed them at work or sneaked out to the café to get their fix and later pretended they had snacked on biscuits, salads or energy bars. Biscuits were the second most popular snack with 44% unable to resist them, followed by 39% eating chocolate, 36% munching crisps, 34% sweets and 21% pastries – many were scoffing more than one type of treat.

Some 19% went for cakes, while

17% preferred breakfast bars and 14% opted for a sausage sandwich.

Despite feeling guilty, 67% said they snack to boost their energy levels during the day, according to a survey of

2,014 adults by hardware specialists

Ironmongery Direct. Spokesman Wayne Lysaght-Mason said: “The bacon butty obviously takes some beating with people preferring them to healthier options – even keeping them a secret from partners.

“There is a minefield of food temptations out there and, despite best intentions, indulgent treats can replace healthy ones.

“Our sweet and savoury snacks then become a secret we are ashamed to talk about.”

The biggest snackers are tradespeople, with 41% enjoying a little treat, followed by 36% of office workers.
