I’m smartin’ about Martin

RED RUM STAR’S COLDPLAY STUDIO PLEA

-

RISING indie stars Red Rum Club are gutted their recording studio may close – because it gives them inspiration from Coldplay’s Chris Martin.

The Liverpool six-piece made great new album The Hollow Of Humdrum at local studio Parr Street, where Coldplay, Take That and Pulp have cut tracks.

Parr Street faces closure in a redevelopment and Red Rum Club singer Fran Doran told me: “It’s sickening if Parr Street closes.

“Whenever we go in to record, the piano Coldplay used gets wheeled out.

“I always sit at that piano, trying to soak up inspiration from Chris Martin. It’s a tear-jerker if Parr Street shuts and that piano goes.”

Scouse singer Jamie Webster got a shoutout video from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp for his recent Top 10 album We Get By – and Red Rum Club are looking for similar support. Fran revealed: “I’m mates with Jamie Carragher’s family, and Jamie has said he’ll do a video for our album.

“We’re calling in a few favours to see who’ll support us from the club.”

The band were permanently on tour before lockdown, their live reputation leading to headlining next year’s Liverpool Sound City festival.

Fran said: “We’ve spent our whole career trying to write about feelings people connect to, and now we’ve all got the same massive feeling worldwide. But it’s really hard to say something new about lockdown and writing loads of songs about it would be s**te.”

At least Red Rum Club aren’t joining in with Ian Brown and Noel Gallagher’s Covid conspiracy theories.

Fran admitted: “Being a great songwriter doesn’t mean the rest of your opinions are going to be right. Noel has written some stellar songs, but that doesn’t exactly make him a great scientist or mathematician.”

Despite their festival headline status and being Radio 2 playlisted, Red Rum Club have been shunned by Spotify.

Fran sighed: “We’re most successful in Liverpool, Yorkshire and Scotland.

“Maybe the people down south in Spotify HQ haven’t noticed us. We don’t lose sleep over it but we’d love an extra million plays from being on their playlists.”
