GOOD BUYS OR BYE BYE FOR BOSS
BRIGHTON boss Graham Potter is doomed unless the club fix their failing transfer strategy, says Adam Virgo.
The Seagulls have won just two Premier League games and are in a relegation scrap.
Potter (right) was snapped up from Swansea in May 2019 and guided the south coast side to
15th last season. But Virgo has warned that he is now being held back by below-par signings.
“I like the philosophy he is trying to implement and you see youngsters like Aaron Connolly, Steven Alzate and Ben White progressing through,” said Virgo, who made over
100 appearances for Brighton.
“Under Chris Hughton they wouldn’t necessarily have been given a chance. There’s a lot of positives Potter has brought to the club.
“I’m still ‘Potter in’ at this stage and that’s because the recruitment since they became a Premier League side is not good enough.
“Bring in another manager and you’ve still got the same problems. When you look at
Alireza Jahanbakhsh, Jurgen
Locadia and Neal Maupay it’s almost £60million worth.
“Brighton can’t afford to get that wrong season after season. Maupay can get 20 goals a season in the Championship but I’m amazed they’ve never brought in a top Premier League striker.”
Brighton signed Danny Welbeck from Watford in the summer on a free transfer.
However, the injury-plagued former Manchester
United and
Arsenal ace has just two goals this term and Virgo reckons that Brighton keep missing out on top talent.
“Last January, Paco Alcacer went to Villarreal from Borussia Dortmund,” added Virgo. “He was available for
£18m. They should have been considering someone like him. “Newcastle’s Callum Wilson another they missed out on. “Olivier Giroud is nearing the end of his Chelsea contract. Why not give him a try?
“The current forward line will struggle to get
15 goals between them this season. “It feels they’re relying on three sides being worse than them in order to stay in the top flight.”
